1. Failed Starter Solenoid / Bendix Drive Engagement
A standard marine starter consists of two parts: the electric starter motor and the top-mounted solenoid drive assembly.
How It Works: When functioning correctly, the solenoid acts as both an electrical relay and a mechanical lever. It pushes the pinion gear (Bendix drive) forward to mesh with the teeth on the engine flywheel while simultaneously connecting heavy battery power to rotate the starter motor.
The Failure: If the internal solenoid contacts or drive throw lever fail, or if the Bendix gear mechanism binds on rust/corrosion, shorting the battery posts will feed current directly to the starter motor. The motor will spin freely at high RPM, but because the Bendix gear never pushed forward into the flywheel, the engine does not turn over.
2. Low Battery Voltage Under Starter Load
A battery can show 12.6 volts on a simple static voltmeter but collapse to 8–9 volts the second a heavy load is applied.
The Failure: If your battery was not charging properly during your 30-minute run (due to a failed alternator, loose belt, or bad battery isolator), the voltage dropping under load will provide enough power to make the solenoid click, but insufficient amperage to throw the Bendix gear completely into engagement with the flywheel.
